Dreamcrafter Breaks Maiden in Emphatic Fashion

With a big team of runners looking to step out over the weekend, quality three-year-old filly broke her maiden in emphatic fashion when taking out the NZ Pearl Series event over 1400m at Rotorua on Wednesday in the hands of Mark du Plesis.

After jumping midfield, the speed dropped off dramatically, and while the daughter of Mastercraftsman relaxed nicely throughout, a confident move saw Mark du Plessis take Dreamcrafter into the open and managed to put three lengths on her rivals at the top of the straight.

There was no slowing down as she continued to put a further margin on the field eventually winning by a comfortable 4.5 lengths.

“We’ve thought a bit of her from day one and we’d like to think she can get the Oaks,” co-trainer Pam Gerard said.

“She’s a little hot and has a bit to learn still, but she is a nice staying filly in the making.”

Last year’s Wellington Cup winner, Mister Impatience, will be hoping to make it back-to-back victories in the staying feature at Trentham tomorrow, but will have to overcome a wide barrier draw.

“The draw wasn’t ideal, but hopefully Sam (Spratt) can slide a few positions forward and find some cover in the running,” Gerard said.

“He is in top order and on his work we’d like to think he can win it again.”
Ali Baba is the second runner at Trentham and will be hoping to turn round a below par performance at his last start and lines up in the Rating 65 event over 1600m.

“We’re confident that he is a better horse going left handed, and if he can get some favours from the draw there is no reason he can compete in this field.”

Down south Wonder Woman will be the sole representative at Gore when she lines up in the Listed Gore Guineas over 1335m.

“She’s proven to be a genuine filly up here and looks well placed to be competitive tomorrow,” Gerard said.

“It’s a shame the track is in the slow range, but hopefully where she is drawn will be the best part of the track.”
