Mister Impatience Chases Lucrative Staying Bonus

While the addition of a Group 1, and another two-mile cup victory, would cement his status as one of the most genuine stayers around, the prospect of being the first horse to cash in on the $250,000 staying bonus is further attraction should Mister Impatience be successful in winning this weekend’s Group 1 Auckland Cup feature.

It by no means will be an easy feat, with the European import receiving the top weight of 57kg following the race conditions changing to set-weight and penalties, ultimately giving his higher rated competitors several kilograms – more so than if the Group 1 event retained is open handicap status.

“It’s not ideal, although we believe we have made the right call in keeping him here as opposed to heading to the Adelaide Cup,” co-trainer Chad Ormsby said.

“He’s giving some well rated horses weight, and you need every bit of help you can get over 3200m, not to mention in Group 1 races. We back his ability over this distance and that’s a box that not many can tick.”

Mister Impatience will be ridden once again by Sam Spratt, who will be trying to repeat the performance of the Wellington Cup, and his work leading into Saturday has been pleasing.

“His work on Tuesday morning was solid and I don’t think we could have him any better going into Saturday.” Ormsby said.

The second runner on the program is last start stakes winner Flavigny who looks well placed to make her presence felt in the Group 2 Westbury Stud Classic over 1400m and rider Mark du Plessis will look to add to his successful run with the daughter of Mastercraftsman.

“She’s in great order and the drop back to 1400m won’t worry her at all. If she can get a good economical run in transit, with some cover, her form and work suggests she can make it back to back stakes wins.”

The third and final runner for the Ballymore team will be the talented three-year-old Makarios who lines up in the Rating 65 event over 1200m and will have the services of jockey Mark du Plessis.

“He wasn’t finishing of his races at 1400m, and Danielle (Johnson) was adamant last start that he is a sprinter, so we are going that notion and have applied the blinkers as well,” Ormsby said.

“He has shown us good ability at home, and on the track, we just need to find his pet distance and get conditions to suit. He can cop a good track, although he probably gets through a bit of cut in the ground better than most.”

Makarios is by the promising young sire Makfi and his work on Tuesday morning suggests he is ready to run a bold race on Saturday’s premier meeting at Ellerslie.
